Government cuts ministers’ petrol quota under austerity drive

Published on: June 15, 2026 10:30 AM

Petrol quota, other privileges for ministers reduced: Azam Nazir Tarar

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has reduced the monthly petrol quota and other privileges available to ministers as part of its ongoing austerity campaign aimed at cutting public expenditure and promoting financial discipline.

Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar said the monthly petrol quota for federal ministers has been slashed from 400 litres to 200 litres. The move is part of a broader effort by the government to ensure better utilization of national resources and reduce unnecessary spending.

Speaking on Sunday, the minister said the government has introduced several measures to curb expenditures across ministries and public institutions. He emphasized that the austerity policy reflects the administration’s commitment to financial responsibility and efficient management of state resources.

Tarar stated that ministers have already seen a significant reduction in facilities and privileges available to them. He added that under the current policy framework, there is no room for introducing additional incentives for federal ministers.

The law minister noted that if concerns are raised regarding the revised petrol quota, the matter can be discussed further. However, he reiterated that the government’s priority remains the reduction of non-essential expenditures in line with its fiscal management goals.

According to Tarar, the austerity campaign is intended not only to lessen the burden on the national exchequer but also to strengthen financial discipline within government institutions. He said prudent spending practices are essential to improving public sector efficiency and ensuring that resources are directed toward priority areas.

The government has already implemented a number of cost-cutting measures affecting ministers and senior officials. Tarar indicated that additional steps may be considered in the future as part of a continuing review of the austerity policy.

The latest announcement comes as the government seeks to manage fiscal challenges through spending controls while maintaining essential public services and development priorities.
