Capital unveils digital Muharram monitoring

Published on: June 18, 2026 5:02 PM

Islamabad authorities have launched the “Mehfooz Muharram” app to strengthen security during Muharram-ul-Haram. The application allows citizens to report suspicious activities and share live locations instantly. The initiative aims to improve public safety and support faster responses during religious gatherings.

The new digital platform forms part of a broader security strategy for the federal capital. Authorities have completed geo-tagging of all imambargahs, procession routes, and majalis venues. In addition, drone-based surveillance will monitor sensitive locations throughout Muharram.

The security arrangements were reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Officials informed the meeting that the app includes image-sharing and location-sharing features. These tools will help law enforcement agencies assess threats and coordinate responses more effectively.

Meanwhile, a central control room has been established at Safe City Islamabad. The facility will monitor security operations and maintain coordination among relevant departments. Naqvi directed authorities to implement a comprehensive traffic plan and enforce a four-layer security cordon around religious gatherings and processions.

The minister also ordered strict checks at entry and exit points and emphasized field supervision by officers. Security audits of all processions and majalis have been completed, while Peace and Nigehban Committees have been activated. Authorities expressed confidence that technology-driven monitoring and close coordination with religious leaders will help ensure a peaceful and secure Muharram across the capital.
