Punjab launches crackdown on tax defaulters

Published on: June 24, 2026 1:45 PM

The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has intensified its campaign against tax evasion across the province, sealing the offices of 15 property developers and taking action against several businesses for alleged violations of tax regulations.

According to a PRA spokesperson, the enforcement drive was carried out on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Operations were conducted in multiple divisions, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, and Multan, targeting businesses that failed to comply with provincial tax laws.

During the crackdown, PRA teams sealed the offices of 15 developers over the non-payment of taxes. Authorities also took action against several marquees and marriage halls, which were found to be in violation of tax regulations.

In Lahore, enforcement officials inspected a number of restaurants and seized sales records from businesses where discrepancies were detected between declared sales figures and tax payments. Notices were issued to 25 restaurants following the inspections, with authorities seeking explanations regarding the inconsistencies.

The PRA stated that businesses found repeatedly violating tax rules faced penalties, sealing actions, and legal notices. Officials said the campaign is part of ongoing efforts to improve tax compliance and ensure accurate reporting of taxable transactions.

PRA Chairman Muazzam Iqbal said the authority remains committed to addressing irregularities in sales tax collection and preventing the submission of inaccurate tax returns. He emphasized that strict enforcement measures are being implemented to strengthen the tax system and enhance provincial revenue collection.

The latest operation reflects the provincial government’s broader efforts to expand the tax net and improve financial discipline among businesses. Authorities believe stronger enforcement can help reduce tax evasion and increase public revenues needed for development and public services.

Officials have warned that inspections and enforcement actions will continue across Punjab, urging businesses to comply with tax obligations and maintain accurate records to avoid penalties and legal action.

The PRA said its campaign will remain focused on identifying non-compliant entities and ensuring adherence to provincial tax laws throughout the province.
