Trump warns talks hinge on Hormuz claims

Published on: June 24, 2026 11:37 PM

US President Donald Trump has warned that ongoing negotiations with Iran will be terminated immediately if information regarding shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz proves inaccurate. The warning comes as Washington and Tehran continue diplomatic efforts under a recently agreed framework. The issue is significant because maritime security remains central to regional stability and global energy markets.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had informed the United States that no tolls or insurance fees were being imposed on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that the accuracy of those assurances was essential for maintaining confidence in the negotiation process. According to Trump, any evidence contradicting the claims could jeopardise further diplomatic engagement.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, carrying a substantial share of global energy shipments. Concerns over restrictions, additional charges or disruptions to commercial traffic have remained a key issue throughout recent discussions between Washington and Tehran. Both sides have sought to prevent actions that could increase tensions in the region.

Trump also stated that some Iranian funds frozen under US control remain available for approved transactions. He said the funds could be used by Iran to purchase agricultural commodities from the United States, including wheat, corn and soybeans. The remarks suggest that economic issues continue to play a prominent role in the broader negotiation framework.

The latest comments underscore the fragile nature of the diplomatic process as negotiators move toward more complex discussions. Future talks are expected to address issues including nuclear activities, sanctions and regional security concerns. Observers say maintaining trust and verifying commitments will be critical to sustaining momentum toward a comprehensive agreement.
