PM Shehbaz and Fazlur Rehman highlight dialogue amid political engagement

Published on: June 24, 2026 6:01 PM

A notable exchange in the National Assembly has renewed attention on political dialogue and mediation efforts as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman discussed ongoing contacts and confidential consultations. The discussion came at a time when communication between the government and opposition appears to be improving, raising expectations of broader political engagement in the coming weeks.

Addressing the House, Maulana Fazlur Rehman revealed that he had received a request to play a mediating role in ongoing political matters. He also confirmed holding a private discussion with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the issue. However, he indicated that any details of the conversation could only be shared publicly if the prime minister chose to disclose them himself.

In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz firmly defended the confidentiality of private discussions and stated that conversations held in trust should remain protected. He emphasized that he would not reveal the contents of his exchanges with the JUI-F leader and described confidentiality as an essential principle in political engagement. The prime minister also praised Fazlur Rehman’s standing in national politics, noting that he commands respect across political divides.

Earlier in the session, Shehbaz met opposition leaders and held a brief interaction with Fazlur Rehman inside the assembly hall. The cordial atmosphere continued during the proceedings, with both leaders exchanging remarks that reflected mutual respect despite political differences. The interaction stood out against the backdrop of recent tensions and signaled a more cooperative tone within parliament.

Meanwhile, Fazlur Rehman urged political leaders to adopt patience, tolerance and seriousness in dealing with national issues. He stressed that political disagreements should not undermine state interests and welcomed calls for learning from past mistakes. The veteran politician also emphasized that successful mediation requires cooperation from all stakeholders and cannot be achieved by one individual acting alone.

Discussing broader political challenges, Fazlur Rehman warned that rigid positions could make mediation efforts difficult and reduce prospects for consensus. He argued that meaningful progress depends on dialogue, flexibility and mutual understanding rather than confrontation. The exchange between the two leaders underscored the continuing importance of trust, communication and consensus-building as Pakistan navigates a complex political environment.
