Cristiano Ronaldo dedicated Portugal’s dramatic FIFA World Cup victory over Croatia to the memory of late teammate Diogo Jota, describing the timing as a remarkable “coincidence of life.” Portugal secured a 2-1 win to reach the last 16 almost exactly one year after Jota’s tragic death, making the emotional occasion even more meaningful for the entire squad.
Before and after the match, Ronaldo and his teammates honoured Jota by posing with his No. 21 Portugal jersey in front of supporters. Ronaldo later wore the same shirt while giving post-match interviews, saying the players had discussed the significance of the date before kickoff. He explained that the coincidence of qualifying on the anniversary of Jota’s death made the victory especially emotional.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez also reflected on the emotional occasion, saying the result carried extra meaning because the team had advanced while paying tribute to one of its former stars. He described it as a memorable day for Portuguese football and said the players remained determined to honour Jota’s legacy throughout the tournament. The coach praised the team’s unity during such an emotional period.
Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in Spain on July 3 last year while the Liverpool forward was travelling back to England for pre-season training. Since then, Portugal’s national team has continued to remember Jota during major international matches. Earlier in the tournament, supporters also paid tribute after his photograph appeared on the stadium’s giant screen before Portugal’s opening match.
