Women in Uniform

Published on: July 4, 2026 2:37 AM

India has spent years presenting the induction of women into its armed forces as proof of institutional modernity. Republic Day tableaux, permanent commission litigation, combat-support appointments and glossy recruitment messaging have all carried the same promise that the Indian military is opening space for women on equal terms. The record emerging from within that establishment tells a far less comfortable story.

Over the past decade, a series of reported cases involving women officers, officers’ wives and vulnerable women connected to military spaces has raised a question India’s defence establishment can no longer manage through ceremonial language. Is the system designed to protect women, or to abuse them?

In Patiala last year, a woman Major accused a Lieutenant Colonel of sexual harassment. The complaint is said to be under investigation, while Indian media reports pressure being brought to bear on the complainant. In 2015, a woman Captain from the Corps of Signals alleged sexual harassment by her commanding officer, a senior Colonel. A committee reportedly found prima facie evidence, yet the case became another marker of delay and institutional obstruction.

In Srinagar in 2024, a woman flying officer filed a police complaint against a Wing Commander, accusing him of sexual assault, harassment and mental torture. She also alleged that her internal complaint was not treated with seriousness. Then there is Shillong, where police booked a Brigadier in 2025 after the wife of a Colonel accused him of sexual harassment, insult to modesty and criminal intimidation. Separately, an Army Major was found guilty by a General Court Martial in an abuse case involving an 11-year-old girl.

These cases may be different (and must be read only as the tip of a nauseating iceberg), but together, they point towards an a troubling pattern where women face not only misconduct but also the compounded challenges of dealing with hierarchy, reputation, and an internal justice system that frequently drags its feet–unless propelled by public pressure.

This is the contradiction at the heart of India’s military gender story. The same institution that wants applause for showcasing “Nari Shakti” cannot look the other way when its women ask for protection, due process and dignity. Until that changes, every parade-ground celebration of women in uniform will carry an uncomfortable footnote. *
