Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and China’s Wuhan Textile University (WTU) have agreed to facilitate new institutional partnerships through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to expand academic and research collaboration between universities in the two countries.
The understanding was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between HEC officials and a high-level delegation from WTU’s School of Biomedical Engineering, led by HEC Executive Director Dr. Zia Ul Haq.
Under the agreed framework, HEC will identify Pakistani universities interested in establishing undergraduate academic collaboration with WTU, Gwadar Pro reported on Wednesday.
The participating institutions will subsequently formalize their partnerships through MoUs covering academic cooperation, research, and exchange programs. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation through joint research, faculty and student exchanges, joint supervision of postgraduate students, sandwich programs, and undergraduate-level collaboration. Dr. Zia Ul Haq reaffirmed HEC’s commitment to expanding strategic international partnerships that support academic excellence, research, institutional capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
He highlighted the importance of closer engagement between Pakistani and Chinese higher education institutions. The WTU delegation presented the university’s academic strengths in textile and fibre technology, sensor technology, and genetic engineering. It also highlighted its existing collaborations with the National University of Technology (NUTECH) and the Institute of Space Technology (IST), while expressing interest in establishing partnerships with more Pakistani universities.
The Chinese delegation also proposed promoting Chinese language programs in Pakistani universities to improve access to undergraduate education opportunities in China and enhance graduates’ employment prospects.
Both sides also agreed to explore faculty exchange opportunities, collaboration on Chinese language programs-including possible cooperation with the National University of Modern Languages (NUML)-and short-term certification and technical training programs for university technicians.
