The resolution was submitted by Sarah Ahmed, Chairperson of the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau Punjab and a member of the Punjab Assembly. She said stronger measures are needed to ensure the online safety and well-being of children.
The proposal calls for effective legal measures to regulate social media use by children under 16. It also recommends introducing a reliable age verification system to prevent underage users from creating or accessing social media accounts without proper checks.
According to the resolution, increasing social media use has exposed children to serious online risks, including cyberbullying, exploitation, and harmful content. It stresses that new regulations are necessary to provide a safer digital environment for young people.
The resolution also notes that several countries, including Australia, France, China, and the United States, have already introduced similar laws or regulations. The Social Media Access for Children proposal aims to strengthen child protection and promote safer internet use in Punjab.
