Amnesty urges India to stop 'vicious' Muslim protest crackdown | Arab News

Amnesty International has called on Indian authorities to immediately stop the use of excessive force against young protesters, expressing concern over the handling of recent demonstrations and urging an independent investigation into police actions.

In a statement, the global human rights organisation said it was deeply concerned about reports of violence against protesters and what it described as the suppression of peaceful dissent. Amnesty urged Indian police to refrain from using unnecessary or excessive force while dealing with demonstrators exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

The organisation said authorities had imposed extensive restrictions to prevent protesters from reaching Parliament House, including erecting barricades and suspending metro services in parts of the capital. It also highlighted reports that mobile internet services were disrupted during the demonstrations, raising concerns about restrictions on access to information and communication.

Amnesty International stated that the use of force against peaceful protesters should comply with international human rights standards and that governments have an obligation to protect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The rights group called on the Indian government to launch an immediate, independent and impartial investigation into allegations of baton charges and the firing of tear gas during the protests. It said those responsible for any unlawful use of force should be held accountable through a transparent legal process.

The demonstrations were linked to growing public anger over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), India’s nationwide medical entrance examination. Protesters have demanded accountability over the alleged paper leak and called for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The controversy has sparked widespread political debate and public demonstrations across India, with students and opposition groups accusing authorities of failing to ensure the integrity of the examination process.

Indian authorities have not yet issued a detailed response to Amnesty International’s latest statement. The organisation reiterated that safeguarding peaceful protest and protecting fundamental rights are essential components of democratic governance and called for restraint in managing future demonstrations.
