US envoy claims Pak-US ties to remain unscathed after Masood Azhar’s ban

Published on: May 5, 2019 12:04 AM

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Dr Asad Majeed Khan, on Saturday, claimed the UN sanctions on Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar would not deteriorate the relations between the US and Pakistan.

“We want good relations with the US,” he added.

The envoy continued, “Pakistan is against terrorism, and we are taking steps to curb terrorism in the country according to the National Action Plan.”

The Pakistani ambassador noted, “Those steps are not to make anyone happy, but it is for our own need.”

He asserted that in his statements given last two months onwards, US President Donald Trump has said good things about Pakistan.

“Zalmay Khalilzad and General McKenzie recently visited Pakistan and talks between the two countries are continuing at a bilateral level,” Dr Khan added.

On May 1, the UN Security Council (UNSC) 1267 Committee had placed an immediate ban on Maulana Masood Azhar, which entailed restrictions on foreign travel, an arms embargo and freezing of assets.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal had said that slating Azhar on UN Sanctions Committee had been agreed given all political references, including the removal of attempts to link it with Pulwama incident and maligning the Kashmiri struggle for the right to self-determination.
