Pakistan urges UN reforms, raises Middle East, Kashmir issues

Published on: July 22, 2025 3:02 PM

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met with President of the United Nations General Assembly, Philémon Yang, in New York on Monday. Both leaders discussed several important global matters, including the ongoing situation in the Middle East, developments in Iran and Afghanistan, and regional peace and security.

During the meeting, Ishaq Dar stressed the need for a stronger and more responsive United Nations. He emphasized Pakistan’s strong belief in multilateralism and called for urgent reforms in the UN, especially within the Security Council. He added that the Council must become more democratic and effective to truly represent the global community.

Moreover, the Deputy Prime Minister appreciated Yang’s leadership in promoting the UN80 Initiative and the Pact for the Future. He suggested greater coordination between these global efforts to ensure a better future for all nations. He also urged the UN to adopt inclusive strategies that meet the needs of all regions.

Ishaq Dar raised serious concerns about India’s behavior, especially its actions in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted India’s violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, its disinformation campaigns, and support for terrorism through proxies. He called for international focus on resolving these issues peacefully through dialogue and in line with UN resolutions.

The President of the UN General Assembly reaffirmed his vision for promoting peace, development, and inclusivity. He shared his commitment to strengthening the UN’s role in global governance. He also recognized the importance of effective multilateralism to address current and future global challenges.

In conclusion, both leaders agreed on the need to reform global institutions and resolve international disputes through peaceful means. They pledged to continue working together to ensure the UN remains a strong platform for unity, justice, and progress.
