Floods devastate Diamer: 20 Valleys hit

Published on: August 19, 2025 4:06 PM

Gilgit-Baltistan – The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has declared 20 valleys in Diamer district as calamity-hit following heavy rains and flooding. The extreme weather has caused widespread damage across the region, affecting both infrastructure and local communities.

According to official sources, multiple locations in Ghizer district that were previously cut off have now been restored. Emergency teams are continuing recovery operations in remote and high-risk areas impacted by landslides and flash floods.

In a major development, the Skardu-Baltistan Highway has been reopened for traffic after being closed for five days. The road was blocked due to the collapse of Istak Nala and Baghicha Bridge, cutting off Skardu from surrounding regions.

Personnel from the Pakistan Army, FWO, and NHA worked around the clock under the supervision of top military and civil leadership to restore the route within 24 hours. Their efforts have reconnected Skardu to the rest of the country by road.

With the highway now functional, passenger and freight vehicles can safely resume operations, bringing much-needed relief to residents and travelers. Authorities remain on high alert as rains continue to pose risks across Gilgit-Baltistan.
