Maryam Nawaz leads historic flood aid package and welfare boost

Published on: October 6, 2025 7:22 PM

The Punjab cabinet, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, approved a historic relief package for flood victims across the province. The government promised millions in financial aid, tax waivers, and welfare programs to help affected families, farmers, and communities. The cabinet finalized a 171-point agenda focusing on recovery and support for those impacted by the severe floods.

The relief plan offers direct compensation to families who lost loved ones or suffered property damage. Families of deceased victims will receive Rs1 million, while those with permanent or minor disabilities will get Rs500,000 and Rs300,000 respectively. Housing losses will also be compensated, with Rs1 million for destroyed brick houses and varying amounts for partial or full damage to mud houses. Livestock losses will be covered, with Rs500,000 for large animals and Rs50,000 for smaller ones. Distribution will begin on October 17.

Farmers who suffered crop damage will get Rs20,000 per acre for up to 25% losses. The government also waived irrigation and agricultural taxes in 2,855 villages. Maryam Nawaz warned against construction in river channels to avoid future floods. She praised rescue teams, civil defense volunteers, and officials for their tireless efforts during the crisis. Volunteers will receive a salary increase of Rs15,000 as recognition.

The cabinet approved new welfare initiatives, including the Maryam Nawaz Ration Card Pilot Project in Lahore, an interest-free electric taxi program, and e-bike provision for athletes. Educational reforms were also endorsed, such as recruiting teaching interns and fixing MBBS fees for overseas students at $10,000. Energy decisions included a Rs2 reduction per unit in the solar power rate and a tax cut on rent-a-car services to 15%.

She assured the public of continuous efforts to support flood victims and rebuild Punjab.
