Published on: November 8, 2025 11:30 PM

The 23rd death anniversary of renowned Urdu poet, writer and intellectual Jaun Elia was observed on Saturday. Equally skilled in both prose and poetry, Jaun Elia was celebrated for his unique expression and unconventional style, earning fame as a rebellious and nontraditional poet. Born on December 14, 1931, in Amroha, India, Jaun Elia was fluent in English, Arabic and Persian. His notable works include Shayad, Goya, Yani, Guman and Lekin, among others. His first poetry collection, Shayad, was published in 1991 and is regarded as a preface to modern Urdu literature. Lovers of Urdu poetry say that Jaun stood apart for his distinctive poetic voice. Throughout his life, he composed over 50,000 verses and translated more than 60 rare books. Jaun Elia often lamented that poets are not given the respect they deserve during their lifetime. With his unique identity in the literary world, Jaun Elia passed away on November 8, 2002. Even today, his admirers visit his grave at Sakhi Hassan Cemetery to pay tribute to the timeless poet.
