ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society (PESS) on Sunday welcomed the latest structural reforms in the armed forces introduced through the 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling them essential for preparing the military for modern and digital-era warfare. The group particularly endorsed the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), saying it would strengthen jointness and strategic coordination across all defence institutions.
In a meeting held in Islamabad, PESS members also praised the establishment of a separate Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). They noted that this reform would streamline the judiciary by allowing the Supreme Court to prioritise its core constitutional functions, while ensuring that citizens receive timely justice through the new judicial mechanism.

The participants emphasised that constitutional amendments are the prerogative of parliament and may be undertaken as long as the fundamental spirit of the Constitution — especially the separation of powers — remains protected. They also underscored the need for resolving Pakistan’s issues with Afghanistan through engagement and diplomacy, while urging the government to highlight India’s alleged involvement in terrorism through Afghan soil at international forums.
PESS called for institutionalising a quota for the induction of retired armed forces personnel into government departments, noting that many retire at a relatively young age but face limited employment opportunities. The society also demanded that the minimum pension for soldiers, sailors, airmen, and widows of martyrs be aligned with the officially prescribed minimum wage.

The group further appreciated the government’s initiative to establish a dedicated pension fund for long-term sustainability. It urged provincial governments to expedite compensation for ex-servicemen affected by recent floods, many of whom, the society said, are still waiting for relief.
