Royal tradition ends as King Charles battles illness

Published on: December 1, 2025 3:34 PM

King Charles has ended a cherished family tradition as he continues treatment for his undisclosed cancer. The monarch, who once shared memorable winter trips with Prince William and Prince Harry, confirmed earlier this year that his “skiing days are behind” him, marking a significant change in his long-held routine. Despite his complicated relationship with his sons, their shared skiing holidays had remained a symbol of closeness within the royal family.

For the first time in 2023, the annual winter trips were cancelled to prevent any injury ahead of the Coronation, and the following year his diagnosis made the tradition even harder to continue. Moreover, the King’s visit to a Middlesbrough factory revealed how deeply the health battle has affected his daily life, as he openly admitted giving up the hobby he followed for decades.

Throughout the years, Charles and his sons made countless memories in the Swiss Alps, with the 2005 trip becoming one of the most heartwarming moments captured publicly. Additionally, the rare display of bonding between the trio softened public perception and reminded many of their strong family ties, even during difficult times.

Although King Charles can no longer participate, the younger generation is keeping the tradition alive. Furthermore, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took Archie and Lilibet on their first skiing holiday in 2023, highlighting their intent to pass the activity down to their children. Similarly, Prince William and Kate Middleton have frequently visited the Alps with George, Charlotte, and Louis.

As the King focuses on his recovery, this shift reflects a broader change in royal life and traditions. Yet, the continuation of these skiing trips by William and Harry ensures that the family’s long-standing winter legacy continues through the next generation, keeping the bond between past and present intact.
