Ashes security ramps up after Sydney terror attack

Published on: December 15, 2025 4:32 PM

ADELAIDE – Security has been significantly increased for the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval following the deadly terror attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Authorities confirmed extra police, armed units, and checkpoints will protect players and fans during the match starting December 17.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said risk assessments are standard, but the Sydney attack prompted heightened precautionary measures. Police are working closely with Adelaide Oval management to ensure a safe environment for spectators.

Security Response Section (SRS) officers, trained and armed with rifles, pistols, and protective gear, will be deployed around the stadium. Additional checkpoints and crowd management measures will also be in place to ensure public safety.

Commissioner Grant Stevens emphasized there is no specific threat to the Ashes Test, but authorities aim to balance preparedness with reassurance. Fans are expected to enjoy the match safely under the enhanced security measures.

Tributes to the Bondi Beach victims will be held at Adelaide Oval, with flags flown at half-mast and a pre-match ceremony planned. Officials, including Cricket Australia and the ECB, stressed the importance of continuing the game while honoring those affected.
