ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned India’s sudden alteration of the River Chenab’s flow, calling it a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and urging the international community to take notice. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andarabi described the move as unacceptable, stressing that no unilateral action regarding shared rivers is permissible under international law.

Andarabi highlighted unusual fluctuations in the Chenab’s water level since December, raising serious concerns over India releasing water without prior notification. He warned that such actions threaten regional peace and stability, urging global actors to hold India accountable. The spokesperson also condemned discriminatory treatment of a Muslim woman doctor in Bihar, urging India to protect minority rights and ensure religious freedom.

In a related development, Pakistan reiterated its stance on Kashmir at the United Nations. Pakistani Consul Gul Qaiser Sarwani rejected India’s claims over the disputed region, emphasizing that Jammu and Kashmir remains internationally recognized as disputed territory. Sarwani criticized India for failing to grant Kashmiris their right to self-determination, highlighting the enduring threat to regional stability.
The diplomat further accused India of sponsoring cross-border terrorism, citing support for banned militant groups including Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Fitna al-Khawarij, and the Balochistan Liberation Army. He alleged that India has been linked to targeted killings and violent acts not only in South Asia but also internationally.

Addressing India’s recent statements on the Indus Waters Treaty, Sarwani said New Delhi was deliberately misrepresenting the agreement, which does not permit any unilateral suspension or amendments.
