The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned tourists to avoid high-altitude areas due to forecasted snowfall, landslides, and avalanches. The alert comes as a westerly wave is expected to hit western and upper parts of Pakistan from December 29, intensifying on December 30. Authorities said the system may persist in upper regions until the morning of January 2, 2026.
Snowfall could lead to road closures and slippery conditions in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli. NDMA also warned of possible landslides and avalanches in hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir during the same period.
Tourists were specifically advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable locations. Meanwhile, fog is expected to reduce in central and southern Punjab as well as upper Sindh during the wet spell. NDMA emphasized staying updated on weather developments before traveling.
The disaster management authority instructed Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Management Authority, and ICT administration to ensure full preparedness. Emergency response teams should remain on alert, proactively protect life and property, and maintain timely communication with the public.

NDMA said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to provide immediate response and mitigation. Authorities urged residents and tourists to follow safety guidelines to minimize risks during the approaching storm.
