Canada probes Air India pilot alcohol incident

Published on: January 2, 2026 9:00 PM

Canada’s transport regulator has asked Air India to investigate a pilot who reported for duty under alcohol influence. The pilot failed two breathalyzer tests. Tests were conducted by Canadian police at Vancouver International Airport.

The incident caused a last-minute delay on the Vancouver-Delhi flight on December 23. Air India replaced the pilot with an alternate crew. The airline said the pilot has been taken off flying duties during the inquiry.

Transport Canada labeled the matter “serious” in a letter to Air India. The agency has asked for a report and preventive steps by January 26. Authorities may also pursue enforcement action depending on findings.

Air India said any confirmed violation will attract strict disciplinary action. The airline maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward rule violations. The company highlighted efforts to ensure flight safety and regulatory compliance.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of India’s aviation safety. Air India pilots recently received warnings over safety lapses. Investigations follow the 2023 Boeing Dreamliner crash that killed 260 people.
