Karachi: Comedian and host Tabish Hashmi suggested privatizing Karachi following the Gul Plaza tragedy, criticizing government negligence. He said privatization could allow the city’s diverse communities to manage it effectively. Hashmi made the remarks during a private TV program.
He recalled growing up in Karachi, attending school and university, and visiting Gul Plaza with his family. Hashmi noted that almost every household in the city owns items purchased from Gul Plaza and said many city associations have disappeared over the years.

Hashmi criticized authorities’ response to the incident, saying accountability remains unclear. He emphasized that structural oversight is a responsibility of local government and that repeated negligence continues to endanger lives. He also highlighted that compensation for victims is rarely borne personally by officials.
Commenting on Karachi’s mayor, Hashmi said officials often justify failures instead of resigning, unlike practices in other countries. He also questioned MQM’s role, asking whether the party truly trusts its mandate despite holding significant seats in the city.
