Kazakhstan president inks $7B Pakistan rail deal

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will visit Pakistan on February 3, 2026, to sign a $7 billion rail connectivity pact. The project will link Pakistan with Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan, enhancing regional trade. Officials said the agreement will make Pakistan a key transit hub for Central Asia.

During a preparatory meeting, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador Yerzhan Kistafin and Pakistan’s Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi discussed project details. They highlighted the rail network’s importance for trade and regional connectivity. Both sides emphasized completing the project within three years to meet growing transport demands.

The rail line will pass through Chaman and connect multiple Central Asian countries with Pakistan. Experts said this link could significantly reduce transport time and costs for regional trade. Moreover, it is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s role in regional logistics and commerce.

Officials explained that the memorandum of understanding will formalize cooperation in the railway sector. They noted that the rail link supports Pakistan’s regional connectivity framework. Additionally, the project will create jobs and encourage investments in infrastructure along the route.

In conclusion, the Pakistan–Kazakhstan rail project is seen as a major step toward regional integration.
