Pakistan Navy launches Muhafizul Bahr to protect trade

Published on: March 9, 2026 8:46 PM

The Pakistan Navy has launched Operation Muhafizul Bahr to counter multidimensional threats to national shipping and maritime trade, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said. The move comes amid evolving regional maritime security challenges and potential disruptions to critical sea lanes.

The ISPR stated that the operation aims to safeguard the uninterrupted flow of national energy supplies and protect key sea lines of communication. Navy escort operations are being coordinated closely with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to ensure merchant vessels’ safe transit.

With nearly 90 percent of Pakistan’s trade conducted via sea, the operation is critical to maintaining secure and uninterrupted maritime routes. Currently, Pakistan Navy ships are escorting two merchant vessels as part of the mission.

The statement emphasized that the Navy is fully aware of the prevailing maritime situation and is actively monitoring and controlling merchant vessel movements. The operation demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to securing national shipping and regional maritime stability.
