Pak-Afghan peace jirga planned to ease border tensions

Published on: March 29, 2026 3:00 PM

A major peace jirga between Pakistan and Afghanistan will take place in Peshawar on March 31, aiming to promote dialogue and develop a joint framework for peace and stability between the two neighboring countries. Organizers say the gathering will encourage cooperation and reduce rising tensions that have strained relations in recent months.

The jirga is being organized under the auspices of Aspire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Qaumi Islahi Tehreek. Officials said the forum will bring together influential figures from both sides to discuss practical steps that can help strengthen trust and support long-term peace efforts.

According to former provincial chief secretary Arbab Shehzad Khan, the meeting will be attended by prominent political leaders, tribal elders, religious scholars, members of civil society, business representatives and media professionals. Participants are expected to share perspectives on key challenges affecting relations between the two countries.

Organizers explained that the jirga will focus on promoting mutual respect, encouraging confidence-building measures and opening channels for serious negotiations. Discussions will also explore ways to improve cross-border understanding and cooperation while addressing concerns that have fueled tensions along the frontier.

Meanwhile, leaders involved in the initiative say the current regional environment makes such dialogue more important than ever. They believe community-level engagement, combined with diplomatic efforts, can help reduce misunderstandings and create opportunities for constructive cooperation between the neighboring nations.

At the conclusion of the gathering, organizers plan to issue a joint declaration supporting peace and dialogue. The document will then be shared with the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan in hopes that its recommendations can contribute to a more stable and cooperative relationship.
