Bushra Bibi seeks sentence suspension after eye surgery controversy

Published on: April 19, 2026 12:25 PM

Bushra Bibi has approached the Islamabad High Court seeking an early hearing on her plea for suspension of sentence in the £190 million corruption case following a recent eye surgery conducted during her incarceration. Her petition argues that the medical procedure and its circumstances raise serious humanitarian concerns, urging the court to urgently review her request for relief.

According to the application filed through her legal team, including lawyers Salman Safdar and Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry, the court should quickly schedule and decide the pending plea seeking suspension of sentence due to her deteriorating health condition. The petition further emphasizes that the matter requires immediate attention because her medical situation demands constant monitoring and timely legal intervention.

The plea states that Bushra Bibi, currently imprisoned at Adiala Jail, underwent eye surgery at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital under circumstances that were allegedly not communicated to her lawyers or family members beforehand. This lack of information, the petition claims, raised concerns about transparency and proper medical oversight during the procedure.

Furthermore, the application says her daughters learned about the surgery only after meeting her on April 17, when they reportedly found her distressed with bandaged eyes and limited vision. The plea also alleges that authorities failed to provide medical documents, including diagnostic details, surgical notes, and post-operative care records, despite repeated requests from her legal team.

The petition also argues that jail officials did not follow an earlier court order directing them to facilitate meetings between Bushra Bibi and her lawyers. As a result, the application states that she was deprived of the opportunity to pursue timely legal remedies and adequately prepare her defense while dealing with worsening health conditions.

Finally, the plea maintains that continued detention after a surgical procedure without adequate medical supervision could amount to inhumane treatment. Therefore, it requests the court to summon prison and hospital officials, obtain complete medical records, and consider transferring her to a specialized medical facility while reviewing her appeal.
