Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Pakistan is steadily moving toward a digital and cashless economy under the vision of Shehbaz Sharif. Speaking at the Pakistan-EU Business Forum, she highlighted the growing importance of digital technology in transforming economic activity and improving access to services across the country. According to the minister, strengthening digital systems will help modernise Pakistan’s economy and bring greater efficiency to financial transactions and public services.
During her address, Shaza Fatima explained that the internet has become an essential tool for nearly every sector, including healthcare, education, commerce and government services. She emphasised that reliable and high-quality internet connectivity enables citizens to access important services quickly and conveniently with just a single online interaction. As digital platforms expand, individuals and businesses can perform financial transactions, receive public services and access educational resources without physical barriers.

The minister also noted that Pakistan is gradually transitioning toward a cashless market where digital payments and online transactions play a central role in everyday economic activity. She said this shift can significantly reduce fraud and enhance transparency in financial dealings by ensuring that transactions are traceable and secure. Furthermore, digital payment systems allow businesses and consumers to operate more efficiently while reducing reliance on traditional cash-based exchanges.
Shaza Fatima stressed that preparing young Pakistanis for the digital economy remains a key priority for the government as global technology trends continue to evolve rapidly. She said authorities are focusing on equipping youth with modern digital skills that match the demands of international technology markets. By strengthening technological capabilities, the country aims to enable its workforce to compete effectively in global industries while also encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship within Pakistan.

The minister further explained that expanding internet access and deploying advanced technologies can help bridge longstanding gaps in access to opportunities and services. Improved connectivity, she said, will reduce disparities in education, healthcare, business opportunities and government support between different regions. As digital infrastructure grows stronger, more communities across Pakistan will be able to benefit from equal access to modern services and economic participation.
Highlighting ongoing technological progress, Shaza Fatima said the government continues to expand digital infrastructure under the broader Digital Pakistan vision led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. She noted that 3G and 4G mobile internet services were introduced in 2016, while the bidding process for the country’s 5G spectrum concluded successfully about a month ago. With mobile phone usage steadily rising nationwide, the government believes stronger connectivity will play a critical role in accelerating Pakistan’s digital transformation.
