Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has congratulated five countries elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, expressing Pakistan’s commitment to continued cooperation on global peace and security issues.

In a message shared on social media, Dar extended congratulations to Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe following their election to the 15-member Security Council.
He wished the incoming members success in carrying out their responsibilities and emphasized Pakistan’s continued dedication to promoting peace, security, dialogue and multilateral cooperation through the United Nations framework.

Dar noted that Pakistan will remain a member of the Security Council through the end of 2026 and looks forward to working closely with the newly elected countries in pursuit of shared international objectives. He said cooperation among member states is essential for building a more peaceful, secure and equitable world.
The elections were held at the United Nations General Assembly, which selected the five countries to serve two-year terms beginning on January 1, 2027. The elected members will replace outgoing non-permanent members whose terms expire at the end of 2026.
Among the closely watched contests, Kyrgyzstan secured its first-ever seat on the Security Council after defeating the Philippines in multiple rounds of voting. Austria and Portugal won the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group, while Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe were also elected from their respective regional groups.
The Security Council consists of 15 members, including five permanent members with veto power — United States, Russia, China, France and United Kingdom — alongside ten elected non-permanent members.

Pakistan was elected to the Security Council in 2024 for a historic eighth term and currently represents the Asia-Pacific group until December 2026.
