Black salt gains attention for promising health benefits

Published on: June 9, 2026 4:57 PM

A recent scientific review has drawn attention to black salt, highlighting its potential health benefits beyond its traditional use as a seasoning. Researchers say the mineral-rich ingredient may support several important body functions, making it an increasingly discussed topic in nutrition and wellness circles.

Experts noted that black salt contains lower sodium levels than regular table salt while offering valuable minerals such as iron, calcium and magnesium. These nutrients play an important role in maintaining healthy bones, muscles, nerves and overall physical well-being when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

In addition, researchers found that naturally occurring sulfur compounds in black salt may contribute to better cardiovascular health. These compounds could help improve blood vessel function, reduce inflammation and support heart health, while some findings also suggest possible benefits for kidney function and protection against oxidative stress.

The review further highlighted black salt’s potential role in digestive health. Scientists observed that compounds linked to Triphala, a well-known traditional herbal formulation, may help improve digestion, strengthen immunity and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut environment.

Researchers also pointed to possible oral health benefits associated with black salt. Studies suggest its antibacterial properties may help limit the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, potentially supporting healthier gums, improved oral hygiene and fresher breath when used alongside regular dental care practices.

Known for its distinctive sulfur-like aroma and egg-like flavor, black salt remains a popular ingredient in vegan cooking and is commonly added to salads, vegetables, beverages and tofu-based dishes. However, researchers stressed that while current findings appear encouraging, larger and longer-term clinical studies are still needed to confirm its full range of health benefits.
