Punjab education authorities have approved a new “Libraries on Wheels” initiative for government schools in Lahore, aiming to improve reading habits and expand access to modern digital learning tools. The project combines mobile library services with technology-based education to support students across different schools on a rotating schedule.
Officials estimate the project cost at around Rs198 million and describe it as a major step toward educational reform in public schools. Under the plan, authorities will introduce 85 electric vehicles that will function as mobile libraries, bringing books and digital learning resources directly to students at their school campuses.
Each vehicle will carry 20 tablets to support digital learning activities and provide students with access to modern educational content. In addition, every mobile library will include a large LED screen that will be used for interactive lessons, presentations and group learning sessions during school visits.
The mobile units will operate on a fixed daily schedule, visiting one school per day to ensure fair access for students across the system. Furthermore, the electric vehicles will be charged at designated charging stations installed within school premises to maintain uninterrupted service and sustainability.
According to the District Education Authority, the project aims to strengthen reading culture among students while improving overall educational quality in government schools. Officials believe that combining traditional books with digital tools will help students develop stronger learning skills and better academic engagement.
Meanwhile, education officials say the initiative reflects a broader effort to modernize school infrastructure and integrate technology into classrooms. CEO Tariq Mahmood stated that students will benefit from both physical books and digital content, creating a more interactive and accessible learning environment across Lahore.
