New eligibility criteria have been set for the appointment of vice chancellors of government medical universities, under which new conditions related to age, teaching experience and academic qualifications have been introduced. According to the new proposed criteria, the maximum age limit for the post of vice chancellor has been set at 70 years. Under the rules, successful candidates from second division in MBBS will also be eligible for this post. The eligibility criteria also include the condition that the candidate must have served as a professor for at least 10 years, in addition to this, it has been made mandatory to have at least 20 research publications along with a post-graduation or PhD degree. This development comes at a time when more than 90 per cent merit is generally seen for admissions to government medical universities, due to which the new rules are also being discussed in various quarters.
