Pakistan and China jointly hosted an Arria-Formula meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the implementation of Security Council resolutions and their importance in maintaining international peace and security. The session brought together UN member states to examine practical ways to ensure that council decisions are implemented fully, effectively and without discrimination across different global conflicts.
The meeting, held under the theme “Bridging the Implementation Gap: Security Council Resolutions and the Maintenance of International Peace and Security,” focused on challenges that continue to hinder enforcement of UNSC decisions. Participants emphasized that consistent implementation remains essential for strengthening the council’s credibility and enhancing its ability to address international disputes and security threats.
Addressing the gathering, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stressed that Security Council resolutions are legally binding obligations under the UN Charter rather than simple political statements. He noted that selective implementation and prolonged delays weaken the authority of the council, prolong conflicts and increase human suffering in affected regions.
Furthermore, the ambassador highlighted long-standing disputes such as Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, arguing that unresolved implementation issues have contributed to continued instability. He said the failure to enforce relevant resolutions has prevented meaningful progress toward peaceful settlements and has extended hardships faced by people living in conflict-affected areas.
Regarding Jammu and Kashmir, Ahmad stated that the lack of implementation of UN resolutions has left a major international dispute unresolved for decades. He added that the situation continues to carry implications for regional and global peace while affecting the lives and rights of the Kashmiri people.
By jointly convening the meeting, Pakistan and China reaffirmed their support for multilateral cooperation, the authority of the Security Council and the principles of the UN Charter. Both countries underscored the need for greater international commitment to implementing council resolutions in order to promote peace, stability and respect for international law.
