Ireland registered their first-ever men’s international victory over India with a memorable 34-run win in the opening T20 International at Stormont, ending the reigning world champions’ unbeaten run since lifting the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
After being put under early pressure, Ireland recovered from 51-4 to post a competitive total of 182-9 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Lorcan Tucker anchored the innings with a composed 50, while Gareth Delany added a valuable 49 to help the hosts rebuild and set India a challenging target.
India’s chase began aggressively as Abhishek Sharma blasted a 19-ball half-century, striking seven fours and two sixes to put the visitors in control during the powerplay. However, his dismissal in the eighth over triggered a dramatic collapse as Ireland’s bowlers tightened their grip on the contest.
Making an impressive international debut, left-arm pacer Jai Moondra dismissed opener Sanju Samson with his very first delivery and later removed Shivam Dube, finishing with figures of 2-25. Fellow debutant Matt Hollard stole the spotlight by claiming 3-28, including the prized wickets of Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer, and all-rounder Washington Sundar. Hollard was named Player of the Match for his match-winning spell.
India were eventually bowled out for 148 with seven balls remaining, handing Ireland a famous victory by 34 runs. The defeat also marked India’s first loss since successfully defending their T20 World Cup title in March.
The match was also notable for the absence of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose senior debut had been widely anticipated following his standout performances in the Indian Premier League. Despite fielding seven members of their World Cup-winning side, India were outplayed by an inspired Irish team.
The victory represents one of the biggest achievements in Irish cricket and provides a significant confidence boost ahead of the remainder of the T20 series.
