US, Iran resume technical talks in Doha

Published on: July 1, 2026 3:12 PM

US and Iranian officials will hold indirect technical talks in Doha on Wednesday. The discussions aim to advance a memorandum of understanding following recent diplomatic progress. The meeting matters because it could strengthen dialogue between both countries through continued mediation.

The talks will be held with mediation from Qatar and Pakistan, according to a diplomat who spoke to AFP. The discussions will focus on technical aspects of the proposed memorandum of understanding. Officials also hope to build on progress achieved during the recent Lake Lucerne Summit. Both sides will continue indirect engagement instead of direct negotiations.

US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will not participate in Wednesday’s technical discussions. The diplomat confirmed their absence after meetings in Doha on Tuesday. However, both envoys met Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani before the scheduled talks. Those meetings helped prepare for the next phase of diplomatic engagement.

Meanwhile, Qatar continues playing a key role in facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran. Pakistan is also supporting mediation efforts during the ongoing diplomatic process. The technical meeting could help resolve outstanding issues before future political negotiations. However, officials have not disclosed how long the discussions will continue.

The latest engagement reflects continuing efforts to maintain dialogue despite longstanding tensions between the United States and Iran. Observers will closely monitor the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting in Doha. Any progress could support future diplomatic negotiations between both sides. Further updates are expected after the technical talks conclude.
