Türkiye, Syria deepen naval cooperation ties

Published on: July 14, 2026 9:43 PM

Türkiye and Syria have expanded cooperation in the maritime domain as senior military officials held talks in Latakia to strengthen defence relations. The naval engagement reflects increasing coordination between the two countries and focuses on improving military collaboration and supporting Syria’s armed forces restructuring efforts.

A Turkish military delegation led by Naval Forces Commander Admiral Ercument Tatlioglu visited Syria’s Port of Latakia aboard the Turkish frigate TCG Istanbul. The visit was arranged at the invitation of Syrian Navy Commander Brigadier General Mohammed Al-Saud, who welcomed the delegation upon its arrival at the port.

Turkish Ambassador to Damascus Nuh Yilmaz said cooperation and solidarity between Türkiye and Syria were developing in the naval field. He expressed satisfaction over the progress and praised the participation of the Turkish naval vessel, saying the visit demonstrated the importance of growing military ties between the two countries.

During the visit, Admiral Tatlioglu and Brigadier General Al-Saud held delegation-level discussions focused on enhancing defence cooperation and improving coordination between their naval forces. The talks were also linked to broader efforts aimed at supporting the restructuring and development of the Syrian Armed Forces.
