Cop martyred as terrorists attack Bannu police station

Published on: July 16, 2026 3:13 PM

A police officer was martyred and 10 others were injured after terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the Miryan Police Station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

According to police, the attackers attempted to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into the police station late Wednesday night, triggering a powerful explosion that was followed by an intense exchange of gunfire. The militants then tried to storm the facility, but police and security personnel responded swiftly, preventing them from breaching the station.

Police official Noor Jamal Khan, who sustained critical injuries during the attack, later succumbed to his wounds. Six security personnel and four civilians were also injured and are receiving medical treatment.

Officials said several militants were killed or injured during the firefight, although the exact number has not been disclosed. Some attackers managed to escape under the cover of darkness, and security forces have launched efforts to trace them.

Before targeting the police station, the militants reportedly destroyed a previously damaged bridge leading to the facility in an attempt to block reinforcement and rescue teams from reaching the area.

Funeral prayers for the martyred officer were held with full official honours at the Bannu Police Lines, attended by senior police officials, including the district and regional police leadership.

Bannu has witnessed repeated militant attacks in recent months. Earlier this year, an explosion near the same police station killed two people and injured 17 others. The facility was also targeted multiple times by quadcopter attacks in 2025, underscoring the persistent security challenges in the district.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the attack, as well as another militant assault in Lower Dir in which two policemen were martyred. He paid tribute to the fallen personnel, extended condolences to their families, and reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to eliminating terrorism and strengthening public security across the province.
