Azerbaijan backs Palestinian state with East Jerusalem capital

Azerbaijan has reaffirmed support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. President Ilham Aliyev made the statement during a meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa. The move highlights Azerbaijan’s continued backing for the two-state solution.

According to the Azerbaijani presidency, Aliyev said Palestinian Prime Minister Mustafa’s visit would help strengthen relations between the two nations. He emphasised Azerbaijan’s support for Palestinian sovereignty and described bilateral ties as based on friendship and cooperation.

During the meeting, Mustafa conveyed greetings from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Aliyev. The Palestinian prime minister said Palestine was facing a difficult situation and expressed hope that Palestinians could overcome challenges with support from international partners.

Mustafa thanked Azerbaijan for its support to Palestine, including humanitarian assistance and plans to build a secondary school. Officials also highlighted Azerbaijan’s representative office in Ramallah and its support for the Palestinian Embassy in Baku as signs of strong bilateral relations.

The two sides also discussed economic and educational cooperation between Azerbaijan and Palestine. Azerbaijan has previously provided financial assistance to Palestine and supported Palestinian students through scholarship programmes. Officials further discussed expanding trade links, including preferential exports of Palestinian agricultural products to Azerbaijan.
