Police arrested a man after he allegedly fired several shots into the air near the vehicle of Federal Information Minister Ataullah Tarar in Lahore’s Defence A area, while the minister was travelling with his family late Saturday night. Authorities said preliminary findings indicate the incident was not a targeted attack, and no injuries were reported during the episode.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Osama, allegedly overtook the minister’s vehicle before displaying a firearm and firing into the air. Meanwhile, Tarar’s security team immediately followed the vehicle, recorded its registration number and alerted nearby police, enabling officers to launch a swift response and begin an investigation.
Investigators later arrested the suspect with the help of Safe City surveillance cameras and other modern investigative technology. Police also recovered the firearm allegedly used in the incident and seized the vehicle involved. Furthermore, authorities registered a criminal case against the accused, while legal proceedings and a detailed investigation continue.

Speaking about the incident, Tarar clarified that he and his family remained unharmed throughout the encounter. He also stated that the suspect was unaware a federal minister was travelling in the vehicle and insisted the gunfire was not directed at him, helping ease concerns about a possible assassination attempt.
Police officials said the available evidence suggests the firing was an act of aerial gunfire rather than a planned attack on the minister. However, investigators will continue examining all aspects of the case before reaching a final conclusion, while authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the law against illegal weapon use.
