Iran claims two tankers exploded in Hormuz

Published on: July 20, 2026 5:40 PM

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said two oil tankers exploded in the southern Strait of Hormuz on Monday. The force claimed the vessels became immobilized while using a route it described as unsafe. Reuters could not independently verify the claims.

According to the IRGC, the tankers attempted to transit a southern passage allegedly recommended by the US military. However, the statement did not identify the vessels, their flags, crews, or any possible casualties.

The Guards said the Strait of Hormuz would remain unsafe while what they described as US aggression continued. Moreover, they warned the route would not be secure for transporting oil, gas, or petrochemical products under current conditions.

The statement also warned the US military to prepare for what it called a “punitive operation.” However, no additional details were provided regarding the nature or timing of any potential action.

The reported incident comes as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate. Therefore, concerns are growing over the security of one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of global oil exports. Any disruption to maritime traffic could affect international energy markets and regional security. Officials have not confirmed any impact on commercial shipping.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the IRGC’s claims. Meanwhile, international observers continue monitoring developments as military exchanges between Iran and the United States intensify across the Gulf region.
