IHC declares SBP governor Tariq Bajwa’s appointment legal

Published on: July 17, 2018 2:42 PM

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected on Tuesday a petition filed on August 16, 2017, by 22 senators against the appointment of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor Tariq Bajwa.

The Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the petition and overruled it by citing that the appointment of Bajwa was according to the law.

Justice Aurangzeb remarked, “Bajwa’s appointment is in accordance with the law and Constitution.”

On August 16, 2017, 22 senators including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders Taj Haider, Farhatullah Babar, Sassi Palejo and Farooq H Naik, filed a petition challenging the appointment of Tariq Bajwa.

The petitioner had said that the proper and legal procedure was not taken to appoint the governor.

Bajwa was appointed SBP governor in July 2017 after completion of Ashraf Mehmood Wathra’s three-year tenure.
