Pakistan downs 77 Indian drones over two days amid border tensions

Published on: May 9, 2025 1:55 PM

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan — In an escalating response to tensions along the border, Pakistan’s military announced that it has successfully shot down 77 Indian drones in the past two days. This comes as part of the ongoing exchange of aggressive actions between the two nations.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 29 drones were destroyed by the evening of May 8, and an additional 48 drones were intercepted overnight. Pakistan’s military confirmed that all drone activities were closely monitored via radar, ensuring that each one was tracked and neutralized before reaching its target. The country’s air defense systems proved effective in intercepting even small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The downed drones were reported in various locations, including Vehari, Pakpattan, and Okara, in Pakistan’s eastern regions. These actions reflect Pakistan’s response to ongoing border skirmishes and India’s repeated drone incursions. Military officials stated that their air defense systems were continuously on high alert and reacted promptly whenever drones approached.

Pakistan’s response was measured, as operational procedures were followed to ensure minimal risk to civilian areas. The military spokesperson confirmed that precautions were taken, especially when intercepting drones near populated zones or in the vicinity of commercial air traffic.

Experts from defense circles have commended Pakistan’s robust air defense capabilities, which have successfully neutralized several incoming threats. The swift actions not only protect military assets but also demonstrate Pakistan’s readiness to defend its airspace. However, analysts warn that the frequent drone incursions could further escalate tensions and call for diplomatic measures to prevent further conflict.

The drone shootdowns come amid an already fragile atmosphere, with both nations on edge after recent airstrikes and border violations. Pakistan has urged the international community to urge India to refrain from provocative actions and to engage in peaceful dialogue to de-escalate tensions. The situation continues to unfold, with global powers watching closely as both countries navigate the high-stakes standoff.
