Israeli attack near Gaza aid site kills over 50, say rescuers

Published on: June 17, 2025 3:21 PM

Israeli forces killed at least 50 people and injured more than 200 near an aid centre in southern Gaza on Tuesday. Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that the victims had gathered in Khan Yunis to receive flour at a charity distribution site. The situation turned deadly when gunfire and shelling hit the crowd.

According to civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal, Israeli drones fired first, followed by tank shells. This sudden attack caused chaos and many casualties. He described the incident as a devastating blow to already struggling civilians. Many people were left wounded and trapped in the area.

The Gaza health ministry confirmed the rising toll. It said 51 bodies and over 200 injured people reached Nasser Medical Complex. At least 20 of the injured are in critical condition. The Israeli army responded briefly, saying it was “looking into” the reports.

This attack adds to the growing toll of Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. Fighting resumed on March 18 after a temporary truce. Since then, more than 5,100 people have died, according to the Gaza health ministry. Thousands more have suffered injuries or lost their homes.

Overall, the war that began on October 7, 2023, has killed 55,432 people in Gaza. As conditions worsen, aid access remains limited. International concern is growing as attacks continue near civilian areas and aid zones.
