No wicketkeeping role for Babar Azam, confirms Mike Hesson

Published on: July 10, 2025 9:44 PM

Head coach of Pakistan’s white-ball team, Mike Hesson, has firmly denied rumors that Babar Azam was asked to take up wicketkeeping duties to stay in the playing XI. Speaking during a press conference at the National Stadium Karachi, Hesson clarified that the star batter is not being considered for wicketkeeping, despite circulating media reports. “There are many stories going around, but let me be clear — Babar Azam is not in our plans as a wicketkeeper,” he said.

Hesson emphasized that if Babar is included in the playing XI, he will likely play in the top order, possibly opening with Saim Ayub or Fakhar Zaman. “We see Babar as a specialist top-order batter. His skills with the bat remain vital to the team’s success,” Hesson added, reinforcing confidence in Babar’s abilities.

He also addressed Pakistan’s T20 struggles, stating no batter has been told to maintain a strike rate of 150. “We’re lagging behind other nations in T20s, mainly due to our slower batting approach. In modern-day cricket, intent and quick scoring are essential,” he explained. Hesson hinted at a shift in approach as the team prepares for upcoming challenges.

Regarding upcoming tours to Bangladesh and the West Indies, Hesson confirmed that a training camp is in progress in Karachi. He praised Hasan Ali’s recent form and confirmed his participation in the West Indies tour, while Salman Mirza will get a chance in his absence during Bangladesh matches. “We’re trying to give consistent chances to players who fit the international plans,” he said.

On injuries, Shaheen Shah Afridi will not travel to Bangladesh but is working to fix certain areas and is expected to return soon. Haris Rauf, however, has been ruled out of the squad due to a hamstring injury.

Talking about the selection process, Hesson confirmed that the selection committee shortlists 20 players, from which the captain and coach choose the final 15. This list is then shared with the PCB Chairman for final approval, ensuring a collaborative and transparent process.
