The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a red alert warning of possible urban flooding in Islamabad and northern Punjab within the next few hours due to heavy rains. Authorities said torrential rainfall could hit these areas between two to six hours, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall.
According to the alert from the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), the regions most at risk include Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, and their adjoining areas. Local administrations have been advised to remain fully alert and prepare for immediate response in case of emergencies.
The NDMA explained that the flooding risk has increased because a system of towering cumulus clouds developed due to intense heat on Friday. This weather pattern could trigger heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across different parts of northern Punjab and the federal capital.
Furthermore, the authority highlighted serious risks such as landslides in hilly terrain, widespread power outages, and damage to weak or vulnerable infrastructure. Officials warned that the combination of flash floods and landslides could severely disrupt daily life in affected areas if precautionary measures are not taken.
Residents have been strongly advised to avoid standing near trees, electric poles, or unstable structures during heavy rains. People have also been urged to park their vehicles in safe areas, avoid flooded roads, and remain indoors to minimize risks.
Meanwhile, disaster response teams and local administrations have been put on alert to carry out rescue and relief operations if required. NDMA stressed that public cooperation and precautionary actions will be crucial in minimizing losses and protecting lives during this period of extreme weather.
