The agreement follows a phone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on October 30, during which both reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and fostering long-term trade ties.

“Pakistan and Canada agreed to facilitate the export of Canadian canola to Pakistan, recognising the significant potential of Pakistan’s expanding market for this Canadian commodity,” the statement said. The move comes as Canada seeks new buyers following China’s imposition of preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola earlier this year.

The two countries also welcomed the conclusion of the first round of negotiations toward a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA), led by Pakistan’s Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh and Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu. The deal aims to create a stable and transparent investment environment to boost investor confidence.

Additionally, both sides expressed interest in strengthening cooperation on energy security and critical minerals, with Canada pledging support for Pakistan’s clean energy ambitions and mineral development goals. The upcoming sixth round of bilateral consultations will further explore areas of strategic collaboration and private-sector linkages.

Canadian officials, including MPs Rob Oliphant and Shafqat Ali, hailed the agreement as a “beneficial deal for both sides,” emphasizing the diversification of Canada’s trade relationships. Minister Anand also confirmed that Pakistan’s decision to lift restrictions on canola imports had already led to new import orders being placed.
