Palestinian flag ceremony disrupted in Toronto, 59-year-old detained

Published on: November 21, 2025 5:11 PM

Toronto police arrested a 59-year-old man for spraying a noxious substance at participants during a Palestinian flag-raising ceremony. The event took place at Toronto City Hall following Canada’s recognition of Palestine. Police confirmed the material was foul-smelling but non-toxic, causing no physical harm.

According to authorities, the suspect initially fled the scene but was later apprehended. Investigators are examining the incident to determine the exact nature of the substance and the motive behind the attack. Law enforcement emphasized that public safety at such events remains a priority.

The flag-raising ceremony was part of a series of celebrations across Canada. Similar events occurred in Mississauga, Brampton, Calgary, and other cities, attracting local residents and supporters. Officials said these gatherings highlight widespread public participation and solidarity with Palestine.

Organizers condemned the attack, stating that it would not deter celebrations or public support. They urged citizens to continue participating peacefully and stressed the importance of inclusive, respectful observances. The incident has sparked a call for vigilance at public events.
