Indian actor Dharmendra passes away at 89

MUMBAI: Indian cinema mourns the loss of Dharmendra Deol, who passed away on Monday at the age of 89, Filmfare reported. The veteran actor had been facing health complications, including respiratory issues, which had required hospitalization earlier this month.

With a career spanning over six decades, Dharmendra starred in more than 300 films, delivering iconic performances in classics such as Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Chupke Chupke. He made his debut in 1960, and his last film, Ikkis, is scheduled for release this December

Throughout his illustrious career, Dharmendra received numerous accolades, including lifetime achievement awards from Filmfare and international honors, as well as India’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan. Beyond films, he briefly ventured into politics, serving as a member of parliament from Bikaner in 2004.

The actor is survived by his wife, Bollywood star Hema Malini, and their children: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta Deol, Ajita Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol. Earlier reports of his death on November 10 had been denied by his family, and he was discharged from the hospital before his final passing.

Tributes poured in from across the film industry following the news. Director Karan Johar, who recently collaborated with Dharmendra on Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, called his death “an end of an era,” praising his charisma, screen presence, and status as a “bonafide legend of Indian cinema.” Actor Boman Irani described him as “ruggedly handsome yet kind,” highlighting his versatility and enduring appeal. Designer Manish Malhotra also shared his grief, calling Dharmendra’s passing “a huge loss to Indian cinema.”
