SHANGLA: The Malala Fund has approved over Rs61.6 million for the rehabilitation and welfare of flood-affected communities in Shangla, Buner, and Swat, officials said on Wednesday. The funding aims to restore educational institutions and support small businesses devastated by recent floods in these districts.

According to the Mehr Foundation, Rs30.08 million has been allocated for the rehabilitation of flood-hit small businesses in Mingora and Swat, while Rs14 million will go toward restoring private schools damaged by the deluge in Swat and Shangla. Buner, Shangla, and Swat suffered severe losses during the cloudburst-induced floods in August, with over 299 lives lost across the three districts.

Additionally, over Rs16.8 million has been set aside to manage libraries, schoolbags, stationery, and other learning materials for 9,980 students enrolled in government schools in the affected areas. Nearly half of the projects have already been completed, and the remaining work will continue as soon as the next tranche of funding is received. An extra Rs800,000 has been earmarked for audit purposes to ensure transparency.

The Malala Fund’s initiative follows a visit by Malala Yousafzai’s father and the Fund’s team to the flood-hit regions, where they promised and now delivered critical financial assistance. Local communities have welcomed the support, noting that it is vital for rebuilding livelihoods and restoring education services disrupted by the floods.

Meanwhile, the Shangla deputy commissioner, Muhammad Fawad Khan, has directed all relevant departments to enhance educational standards and implement practical solutions highlighted in Independent Monitoring Unit reports.

A recent meeting of the Education Steering Committee reviewed school performance, teacher attendance, and student enrolment, aiming to adopt a comprehensive strategy for the improvement of the education sector.
