Bangladesh’s Khaleda Zia critically ill, party appeals for support

Published on: November 29, 2025 8:45 PM

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s health has sharply deteriorated since her hospital admission, prompting urgent concern from family and party members. The 80-year-old leader is being treated in the intensive care unit for a severe lung infection. Her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has urged citizens to pray for her recovery.

Zia was admitted to hospital on November 23 with symptoms of a lung infection, and doctors have described her condition as very critical. She suffers from multiple health issues, including heart problems, liver and kidney complications, diabetes, arthritis, lung ailments, and eye-related conditions. Doctors continue to monitor her closely, administering intensive care to stabilize her condition.

Several senior BNP leaders and supporters visited the hospital to check on her health and receive updates. Her eldest son, Tarique Rahman, based in London, appealed to the public via social media for prayers. He said that while he cannot return to Bangladesh due to circumstances beyond his control, his concern for his mother remains profound.

Zia has a permanent pacemaker and has undergone stenting for heart issues in the past. Despite her critical condition, she has vowed to campaign in the elections expected in February 2026. BNP remains a major political contender, and her participation is considered central to the party’s strategy and morale.

Interim BNP leader Muhammad Yunus called her a source of inspiration for the nation. He emphasized that her recovery is crucial not only for her family but also for the country’s political stability. Party members continue to appeal to the public for support and prayers during this critical period.
