Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed gratitude for Giannandrea’s contributions, stating he played a key role in advancing the company’s AI initiatives. The move comes as Apple faces pressure to keep pace with rivals like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI in the fast-evolving artificial intelligence sector.

Taking over Apple’s AI leadership is Amar Subramanya, a veteran engineer with experience at Microsoft and Google. Subramanya will serve as vice president overseeing AI foundation models and machine learning, reporting to senior VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi. Apple highlighted his track record in integrating AI into products as critical for future Apple Intelligence features.

Apple has faced delays in launching an improved Siri digital assistant, now promised for release next year, reflecting broader challenges in demonstrating AI innovation. The company is racing to ensure it does not fall behind competitors who continue to roll out increasingly advanced AI models and applications.

Cook emphasized that AI is “central to Apple’s strategy” and praised Subramanya’s expertise as “extraordinary,” signaling a renewed focus on innovation and product integration. Analysts note that Apple’s next moves in AI, including enhanced Siri functionality, will be closely watched amid a competitive landscape.
